How SEO, GEO, and AEO actually work

SEO, AEO, and GEO are usually pitched as three separate skills, sometimes even three separate hires. They are not. All three chase the same outcome, a stranger with a real question finds your page, but they aim at three different surfaces: the classic list of results, the answer box sitting above it, and the AI-written paragraph that increasingly skips the results page altogether. This guide breaks down what each one actually optimizes for, where they share a foundation, where they genuinely differ, and the parts nobody, including anyone selling "GEO services," can honestly promise.

Three names, one job

Search engine optimization, answer engine optimization, and generative engine optimization all try to get the same outcome: a person typing a real question finds your page instead of a competitor's. What changed is not the goal, it is the surface. A search results page used to be one thing, a scrollable list of ten blue links. Now the same query can surface a ranked list, a direct-answer box pulled from one page, and a written paragraph assembled from several pages, all on the same screen. SEO, AEO, and GEO are the names people gave to optimizing for each of those three surfaces.

The names arrived in the order the surfaces did. SEO is the oldest discipline, dating back to the earliest link-based search engines. AEO got its name once featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, and voice assistant replies started answering questions directly on the results page, no click required. GEO is the newest term, coined by a group of researchers in 2023 to describe optimizing for engines that generate a written answer instead of returning a ranked list, the paper that introduced it studies systems like the ones behind ChatGPT and Perplexity.1

New to this? An "AI answer" is the paragraph a tool like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews writes back instead of a list of links. A "citation" is when that paragraph names, links to, or visibly leans on your page while writing that answer. GEO is the discipline aimed at earning more of those citations, the same way SEO aims at a spot in the classic results list and AEO aims at the answer box.

The three surfaces, side by side

Before going deeper into each one, it helps to see them next to each other. Same underlying question, three different finish lines.

SEO: ranking in the classic results

Google's own documentation breaks Search down into three stages. First, crawling: "Google downloads text, images, and videos from pages it found on the internet with automated programs called crawlers."2 Second, indexing: Google analyzes what it downloaded and stores that understanding. Third, serving: when someone searches, Google retrieves indexed pages it judges relevant, weighing factors like the query, the user's location and language, and the page itself.

  • Crawlability: a bot has to be able to reach and parse the page. A broken sitemap, an accidental noindex, or a page nothing links to can keep otherwise-great content out of the index entirely.
  • Relevance: the page has to actually match what the searcher is asking, not just contain the same words.
  • Authority: other sites linking to or mentioning the page, historically the biggest differentiator between two similarly relevant pages.
  • Page experience: load speed, mobile usability, and not burying content behind intrusive interstitials.
Google is explicit that none of this is for sale: "Google doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, or rank it higher."2 Anyone offering to buy your way to a higher ranking is not describing how Google Search actually works.

AEO: winning the answer box

AEO targets the box that answers a question directly on the results page, most visibly the featured snippet, but also People Also Ask items and the short answers voice assistants read aloud. Google is direct about how a page ends up there: "Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a user's search request, and if so, elevates it."5 There is no field to fill in and no tag that requests one. You can only opt out, with nosnippet to block snippets entirely or max-snippet to cap their length.

In practice, winning a snippet is less a separate campaign and more a formatting choice layered on top of a page that already ranks. Answer the question in the first sentence or two of the section that covers it, before the surrounding context, under a heading phrased close to how someone would search. Structured data like FAQPage or HowTo schema helps an engine understand and extract that answer cleanly, it does not manipulate placement. Google says outright it has no documented minimum length or formula for a winning snippet, "the minimum length is variable based on a number of factors, including but not limited to the information in the snippet, the language, and the platform."5

GEO: getting cited inside an AI-generated answer

GEO targets a different kind of result entirely: a written paragraph a model produces by pulling from several sources at once, then sometimes citing a handful of them. The term comes from a 2023 paper by Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan, and Deshpande, who describe Generative Engine Optimization as a framework for helping content creators improve their visibility inside these generated responses.1 Testing specific content changes, adding statistics, citing authoritative sources, quoting directly, on their own benchmark, the authors report GEO methods "can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses," while noting that effectiveness varies a lot by domain.1

That 40% figure is worth reading carefully. It is a research result on a benchmark the authors built themselves, not a measured lift on live ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google traffic, and the paper says explicitly that results varied by category. Treat any pitch that quotes that number as your expected return with real skepticism. Google's own AI features documentation, covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, is blunter still: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."6 Google describes those features as using a "query fan-out" technique that issues several related searches behind the scenes and pulls from a wider set of indexed pages than a single search would, but the underlying eligibility bar is the same one regular Search already applies: crawlable, indexed, genuinely useful content, plus accurate structured data.6

Going further: a generative engine rarely retrieves a whole page, it retrieves a chunk, often one paragraph or one section. That changes what "writing for GEO" means in practice: a page can rank well and still get skipped for citation if its best answer is spread across three paragraphs instead of sitting in one self-contained chunk with its source right next to it. Write each section so it could be lifted on its own and still make sense, not just so the page as a whole reads well top to bottom.

The shared foundation all three sit on

Strip away the surface-specific tactics and SEO, AEO, and GEO all depend on the same floor. A page has to be crawlable and indexed before it can rank, be selected for a snippet, or get pulled into a generated answer, none of that happens to a page a bot cannot reach. Structured data helps at every layer too: it is "a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content,"3 built on shared vocabularies from schema.org, a project "founded by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex" and now maintained as an open community effort.4 Marking a recipe, an FAQ, or a how-to with the right schema type does not force a ranking or a citation, it just gives every one of these systems, a classic crawler, a snippet extractor, or a model's retrieval step, a clean, unambiguous read on what the page actually contains.

What is specific to each

  • SEO-specific: keyword and search-intent matching, backlinks and other off-page authority signals, technical performance (Core Web Vitals, mobile usability), and an internal linking structure that spreads authority across the site.
  • AEO-specific: a direct, self-contained answer positioned near the top of the relevant section, question-shaped headings that mirror how people actually search, and FAQPage or HowTo schema that helps an engine extract that answer cleanly.
  • GEO-specific: checkable factual claims with named, verifiable sources instead of vague "studies show" phrasing, quotable self-contained chunks a model can lift without losing meaning, and visible topical depth that gives a generation step a reason to treat your page as authoritative on this specific question.

They overlap far more than they conflict

The common framing, three disciplines, three separate strategies, three separate line items on an invoice, does not match how any of this actually works. A page built well for classic SEO, crawlable, genuinely useful, clearly structured, already covers most of what AEO and GEO need. The real differences are questions of emphasis and formatting on top of that shared base, not opposing approaches that force a tradeoff. A page rewritten to "win at GEO" while ignoring basic crawlability and usefulness will not get cited by anything, because it never clears the floor every one of these systems shares.

From crawl to citation

What nobody can promise

Some of this is genuinely out of anyone's hands, and the honest version of this guide says so plainly instead of implying a checklist guarantees an outcome.

  • No one, not Google, not an SEO agency, not a "GEO consultancy," controls what a third-party AI model chooses to cite. There is no submission form and no verified-citation program with ChatGPT or Perplexity the way Search Console lets you monitor indexing status.
  • Google states plainly that there are no special files, markup, or extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond ordinary SEO fundamentals.6 Anyone claiming a secret technique that bypasses standard crawlability and content quality is selling something.
  • Featured snippets are selected entirely by Google's own systems.5 You cannot request one or mark up content to guarantee one, only opt out of being considered.
  • The GEO paper's headline "up to 40%" figure is a result on the authors' own research benchmark, not a promised lift on real, live AI-answer traffic, and the paper itself notes the effect size varies by domain.1
  • AI answer engines change their retrieval and generation behavior on their own schedule, with no changelog to subscribe to. A page cited today can stop being cited next month with zero changes on your end.

Do this

  1. Confirm the page is actually crawlable and indexed: no accidental noindex, a working sitemap, and real internal links pointing to it.
  2. Answer the specific question the page targets in the first sentence or two of the relevant section, before the surrounding context.
  3. Add structured data that matches the content exactly, Article, FAQPage, or HowTo, in JSON-LD.
  4. Back claims with named, checkable sources instead of vague "studies show" phrasing.
  5. Build real depth on the topic so other pages have a reason to link to yours, and keep the page current as facts change.
  6. Track what you can actually measure, Search Console rankings, clicks, and snippet appearances, and accept that AI-citation visibility is not yet something you can fully monitor from the outside.
Key idea
SEO, AEO, and GEO are one underlying job, being found, aimed at three different surfaces: ranked results, the answer box, and AI-generated answers. All three sit on the same floor: crawlable, genuinely useful, clearly structured content plus accurate schema markup. What differs is emphasis, not strategy. Nobody, including Google's own documentation, claims there is a special trick for AI surfaces beyond doing the fundamentals well, and no one controls what a third-party AI model decides to cite.
